Art Cards - Do You Love Me?
Often life leads us down paths we never planned to take, and we find ourselves in places we never wanted to be. Those moments seem dark, and I have found myself feeling lost- hidden from sight.
Peter, the headstrong, beloved disciple of Jesus, found himself in just such a place. He had run away, leaving his Rabbi alone to be taken. He remained quiet, as his beloved Teacher was falsely accused and tried. He even had denied his beloved Messiah, doing the very thing he had sworn, not 24 hours before, he would never do!! Now, back in his boat, returning to the work he had left behind to follow his LORD, Peter must have felt like his life was over, he had missed his chance, and he could never again be rescued from the darkness.
Then..in the distance…could it be!! His LORD! Flinging everything aside, he jumped into the water without a thought beside “I must be near HIM!” Approaching Jesus, he remembered his shame and the darkness and lostness threatened. How could he be accepted by Jesus again?
Then came the question “Peter, do you love Me?” How could he answer. He had run away, denied Him, and left Him to die alone. Three times the question came “Do you love Me?” Each time Peter answered with all he had, grieved with each reminder of his failure. ”Yes, LORD. You know I love you. You know everything!”
Just as Jesus knew where to find Peter and how to rescue him from his own failures, He knows where to find each of us!! He knows what we need. He knows from what we need rescue, and He invites each of us with a simple “Follow Me” to enter into His family.
As I painted this piece in collaboration with several artist friends, I was reminded of this scene between Jesus and Peter. Like Peter, He has asked me to go to hard places, deal with hard people, and do hard things. I have fallen short and failed…a lot! But with every wrong turn and after every failure Jesus is faithful to ask me “Do you LOVE Me? Then follow ME.” Oh, how good it is to be steadfastly loved by the LORD!
I pray that as you enjoy the beauty in this watercolor piece you will be reminded of His overwhelming love for you and feel His invitation to love Him in return.
