Gramma is dressed in traditional clothing of the Palaung people of Northern Myanmar. She is picking tea leaves near her home in a mountain village. Palaung villages are scattered at the top of the mountains throughout Northern Shan State. The Palaung are known for their tea that is sold throughout Myanmar and neighboring countries. These people work hard but are finding it increasingly difficult to support their families as they face poverty and disease. Most of the young people have left for the cities or neighboring countries to find work. The elderly and children have been left to forage or fend for themselves in the mountains.
